Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- Ronnie Mitchell had an RBI single in the second and Michael Martinez an RBI single in the third inning as the Tri-City ValleyCats handed the Vermont Lake Monsters their fourth 2-1 loss of the New York-Penn League season on Tuesday night at Bruno Stadium.

Hunter Adkins (0-1) came on  in relief of Vermont starter Matt Stalcup, who left after pitching just one inning, and allowed a leadoff double to Connor Gregor in the second. After Gregor advanced to third on a groundout, Mitchell lined an RBI single to center for a 1-0 Tri-City lead. It was the first run allowed by Adkins after tossing nine scoreless innings in his first two starts for Vermont.

The ValleyCats added their second run in the third as James Ramsey walked with one out, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Martinez's two-out RBI single to center. After the Martinez run-scoring single, Adkins retired the next 10 Tri-City batters he faced and finished the night with two runs allowed on five hits over six innings of relief.

Vermont scored its only run in the fifth as Tyler Marincov led off with a double to center, moved to third on a Josh Miller single and scored on a Xavier Macklin RBI forceout. The Lake Monsters had  previous loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on a B.J. Boyd single, Ryon Huck double and walk to Ryan Huck, but Chad Pinder grounded into a 6-4-3 double play on the first pitch he saw to end the inning.

The Lake Monsters got a leadoff single in the eighth from Melvin Mercedes, who advanced to second on a Boog Powell sacrifice bunt. But with the tying run in scoring position with one out, ValleyCats reliever Austin Houser struckout Boyd looking and Healy swinging to end the threat. Gonzalo Sanudo worked a perfect ninth inning for his second save for Tri-City (36-25).

Andrew Thurman (4-2) allowed one run on five hits over five innings to earn the victory for the ValleyCats, while Mitchell was the only player on either team with a two-hit night. The Lake Monsters, now 5-5 this season against Tri-City, wrapped up the roadtrip with three wins in seven games.

The series with the ValleyCats continues on Wednesday as Vermont (29-32) opens a five-game homestand beginning at 7:05 pm. It is the third of three "Hot Dog Heavens" at historic Centennial Field with 25-cent hot dogs on sale throughout the night. The Lake Monsters will host Tri-City again on Thursday before opening a three-game series with Brooklyn on Friday.
