Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners have had an answer all season for the Connecticut Tigers, taking eight of the first nine games between the two teams entering Tuesday night. It was the Tigers who had the upper hand Tuesday at LeLacheur however, taking an early 1-0 lead and pulling away in the middle innings for a 6-1 win.

The loss, coupled with a Tri-City win, dropped the Spinners a half game out of first place in the Stedler Division. Both Jamestown and State College were victorious, pushing the deficit in the Wild Card to 1.5 games.

Connecticut (28-32) jumped out to a first inning lead, the sixth time in the seven game homestand the Spinners have found themselves in an early hole. Curt Powell and Kasey Coffman led off with back-to-back singles. With one-out, a double steal moved both men into scoring position and a Ben Verlander groundout gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers added a run in the third after an infield single by Austin Schotts led off the inning. Schotts took second on a balk and stole third base, coming around to score on an RBI single by Powell to move the Tigers ahead, 2-0.

Lowell (34-24) cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning following a leadoff double from Jose Coloardo. After two quick outs, Manuel Margot delivered a single up the middle to score Colorado and cut the lead to 2-1.

It was not to be however as the Tigers pushed two runs across in the sixth inning and added a single run in the eighth for what would hold as a 6-1 final.

For the Spinners, there weren't many bright spots in an otherwise sparkling seven-game homestand that saw the team go 5-2. Nick Moore did extend his hitting streak to 11-games, the longest hitting streak by a Spinners player since an 11-game hitting streak by Ryan Westmoreland in 2009.

Corey Littrell (0-3, 2.75) took the loss for the Spinners, allowing two runs on four hits in three innings. Simon Mercedes labored through 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out two. Dylan Chavez was nicked for a run on one hit in 2.2 innings, striking out five. Greg Larson closed out the game with a shutout inning, striking out one.

The Spinners and Tigers now both head south to Norwich for the backend of a home and home series. Ty Buttrey (3-3, 2.53) is on the mound Wednesday night for a 7pm first pitch.
