Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Moose Jaw Warriors made it four straight wins on Sunday afternoon in Edmonton.
The Warriors got redemption for a loss one month before at Rogers Place, beating the Oil Kings, 5-1, to close out a two-game road trip to Alberta.
"There was lots of good parts for sure, a little bit sloppy at times, but I thought we started well and then in the third, we came out and played the right way," Warriors associate coach Scott King said.
The Warriors got five goals from five different goal scorers in the win, while Denton Mateychuk picked up four assists, extending his point streak to a modern franchise record 21 games.
Moose Jaw improves to 17-10-0-1 this season and remains in third place in the Eastern Conference, one point back of the Medicine Hat Tigers.
"It was a great weekend," King said.
"As a group, we were all conscious of the fact that we were trying to take the ice away inside, they're going to pound the puck from the top, that's what they do, and I thought we were first to rebounds to help out."
Martin Rysavy opened the scoring with his 10th of the season just 5:14 into the game, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead after one.
Just 4:32 into the second, Ethan Hughes fired home his first of the season to make it 2-0 for the Warriors.
King said Hughes and the fourth line with Owen Berge and Max Finley had a strong game.
"They brought a lot of energy and played well," he said. "Any time you get a goal, obviously you confidence goes up and you feel like you can make more things happen, so it was nice for him to get one and get feeling good about himself."
Pavel McKenzie followed up with his fifth of the season midway through the second to put the Warriors in front by three.
Edmonton got on the board when Roan Woodward broke in on a breakaway and scored less than two minutes later.
The Warriors struck early in the third when Atley Calvert wired home a power play goal for his 16th of the season just 3:33 into the final frame.
Brayden Yager sealed the win with his 17th of the season on the power play in the final minute. Yager finished with a goal and three points in the win.
Dimitri Fortin was sharp, making 26 saves, while the Warriors outshot Edmonton, 42-27, on the night.
"He had some real good saves, he was tested and I thought he answered the bell," King said.
The Warriors went 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Moose Jaw will return to home ice on Wednesday to battle the Red Deer Rebels at the Hangar.
