December 3, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs wrapped up a three game in five-night home stretch on Sunday night, with a tough 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Giants. It was the second annual Neurodiversity Awareness Night with the game atmosphere catered to fans with sensory concerns. A member of the local Isaac Foundation dropped the ceremonial first puck, the Gonzaga Exceptional Bulldogs Hockey Team played on the ice during intermission, and the Integra Meeting Rooms were a dedicated quiet space where fans could decompress and check out sensory kits as needed.
The first period started slow, with Vancouver scoring the only goal thanks to Logen Hammet. Samuel Honzek and Jaden Lipinski provided the assists, which would be a reoccurrence throughout the game. Tyler Thorpe scored next for the Giants, partway through the second period. Lipinski and Honzek with the apples once again.
Just seconds later, Chase Bertholet finally got the Chiefs on the board with assists from Berkly Catton and Conner Roulette.
Berkly Catton battled for the puck along the boards before sliding a slick pass to Bertholet out front for his fifth of the season.
Colton Langkow and Mazden Leslie would score consecutive goals for Vancouver on either side of the second intermission to make it 4-1. Titlbach, Halaburda, and Samuel Honzek added assists on the goals.
The Chiefs would pull one back with a role reversal from the first goal. This time it was Bertholet and Crampton finding Catton shorthanded for his 16th of the season at 15:!9 in the third.
With Dawson Cowan pulled and the extra attacker on the ice, Berkly Catton provided his second assist, finding Cheveldayoff for this third goal of the season at 19:13.
It was a hectic finish as the Chiefs pushed for the late equalizer, ultimately to no avail. Special teams were the story of the night as Vancouver scored on the power play and both teams scored shorthanded. The Chiefs went 0/7 on the power play including a 5 on 3 chance that came up empty. Spokane fired 42 shots on goal with Mirwald making 39 saves for Vancouver. Dawson Cowan made 31 saves in net for the Chiefs.
Spokane will be back in action Friday at Portland before hosting the Wenatchee Wild next Sunday, December 10th for the next Avista Way To Save Poster Series Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans.
