Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Fueled by Kent Walton's grand slam, the Kane County Cougars used a six-run seventh inning to pound the Burlington Bees, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon and win their home opener in front of 4,245 at Elfstrom Stadium. Walton drove in five runs for the game, and starter Chris Mederos allowed an unearned over six innings for the win.
Walton doubled home Conner Crumbliss in the bottom of the first to give the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead, and Chris Affinito followed with a run-scoring grounder to make it 2-0 against Matt Mitchell (0-1). The Bees managed an unearned run in the sixth against Mederos (0-1) for the righty's only blemish. He gave up four hits -- including a bunt single and infield single -- over six frames, walking three and fanning four.
Leonardo Gil started the seventh-inning rally with a sacrifice fly, and Myrio Richard earned a bases-loaded walk before Walton cleared the bases with his first professional grand slam to make it 8-1. Crumbliss drove in Gil in the eighth for the game's final run. The Cougars also received two scoreless innings from Hector Garcia and a perfect ninth from Josh Lansford.
