
Loons Start Season with Sweep

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Great Lakes Loons head into their home opener Sunday afternoon with a perfect 3-0 record following a 7-1 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks Saturday night. The Loons outscored the Silver Hawks by a combined score of 32-7.
First baseman Jerry Sands broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run opposite field home run, scoring left fielder Angelo Songco, who had reached on a leadoff walk.
The Loons received dynamite pitching from the tandem of 20-year-old right-handers Allen Webster and Matt Magill. Webster started and threw five innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits. Magill followed in relief and hurled four shutout frames, striking out five. The two are scheduled to begin the season as a starting tandem, with Magill slated to start next time through the rotation with Webster working in relief.
Leading 3-1, the Loons struck for four runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Third baseman Brian Ruggiano brought home two runs on a double, followed by RBI singles from center fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Songco. Six straight Loons batters reached base in the seventh against reliever Yonata Ortega.
Gorman Erickson, starting his first game of the season at catcher, notched three hits, including the Loons' first triple of the season. Sands recorded two hits.
The Loons play their home opener Sunday at Dow Diamond against the Lansing Lugnuts. Game time is 3:05pm. The game will be preceded by a parade through Downtown Midland and games and activities on the Dow Diamond front lawn. It is Sanford Meridian Mustangs High School Spirit Day at the ballpark and after the game Farm Bureau Insurance presents Kids Run the Bases. Tickets still remain and start at just $6. Right-hander Will Savage, who played last season in independent league baseball, is scheduled to start for the Loons. He will be opposed by right-hander Chad Jenkins.
