Peoria Chiefs News Release

Clinton, IA - Clinton LumberKings shortstop Nick Franklin was a one-man wrecking crew against the Peoria Chiefs Saturday night to lead Clinton to an 8-2 win. Franklin, who went 4-for-4 with two homers, a triple, a double and four runs scored was on deck with a chance to hit for the cycle as the bottom of the eighth ended. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 1-2 on the young season.

For the third straight night the LumberKings took an early lead. With one down Franklin tripled to the right-centerfield wall against Jonathan Nagel. Vince Catricala put Clinton on top 1-0 with a RBI groundout to second base before Nagel struck out Dennis Raben to end the frame.

Clinton extended their lead and knocked Nagel from the game in the bottom of the fourth. Franklin led off with a double and scored on a Catricala single to left. Raben singled Catricala to third and Mario Martinez made it 3-0 with a base-hit to right. Tim Clubb relieved Nagel and got the Chiefs out of the inning with a groundout and two strikeouts.

The Chiefs got back in the game in the top of the fifth as they scored twice without benefit of a hit. Clinton starter Tyler Blandford walked Greg Rohan and Alvaro Ramirez to start the inning before hitting Jose Valdez with a pitch to load the bases. Peoria got on the board with a passed ball and Hak-Ju Lee drove in Ramirez with a sac fly to cut the deficit to 3-2. John Housey relieved Blandford and got out of the jam with Clinton still on top by one.

Clinton responded in the bottom of the inning in a big way against Clubb. Gabriel Noriega led off with a single and Danny Carroll slugged a two-run homer to give Clinton a 5-2 lead. The homer, his second, gives Carroll as many this season as he had all of last season with the LumberKings. Franklin followed with a solo homer to put Clinton on top 6-2.

Franklin kept his big night going on the bottom of the seventh against lefty reliever Jeff Beliveau. Needing just a single for the cycle, the 19-year-old crushed another solo homer to right field to lead off the inning. A first round pick in 2009, Franklin had just one home run in 63 atbats last season. Andres Quezada relieved Beliveau with a runner on first and one out before allowing a run-scoring triple to James Jones as Clinton took an 8-2 lead.

Nagel allowed three runs on six hits while pitching into the fourth inning. The right-hander struck out a career-high six and did not issue a walk. Clubb gave up three runs as well on three hits over two innings of work while striking out three. Beliveau allowed two runs on two hits and a hit batter in 1 1/3 innings while striking out four. Quezada allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 shutout innings.
