Chiefs Shutout Snappers Sunday to Even Record at 2-2 Rohan collects two RBI on three hits
Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs snapped a two-game losing streak with their first shutout of the season and a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon over the Beloit Snappers. Peoria scored in the first inning and led throughout as four pitchers combined for the shutout while striking out 11 Snappers to move the Chiefs to 2-2 on the season. After falling behind in the first three games the Chiefs jumped on Beloit right away on Saturday. With one down Jose Valdez reached on an infield single and moved all the way to third base when Reggie Williams' throw went down the right-field line. Matt Cerda drew a walk from Brad Stillings and Greg Rohan gave the Chiefs the lead with a single to center. It was the first time in four games this season that the Chiefs have scored first. Chiefs' starter Trey McNutt cruised through the first two innings with five strikeouts and no hits allowed. He gave up back-to-back hits to start the third and a Cerda error allowed Beloit to load the bases with nobody out. McNutt responded by striking out the Snappers top two prospects, Angel Morales and Aaron Hicks, before Steven Liddle grounded out to leave the bases loaded. Su-Min Jung reliever McNutt to start the fourth inning and issued consecutive walks to get in a bit of trouble. After recording a pop-up Jung escaped by picking Derrick McCallum off second base to keep the Chiefs on top 1-0. Peoria doubled their lead in the sixth against reliever Matt Tome. Hak-Ju Lee led off with his first extra-base hit of the season, a double to left and Cerda singled with one out. Rohan came through again with an opposite field single to score Lee for a 2-0 lead. Tome loaded the bases with a walk of Justin Bour but struck out Jovan Rosa and George Matheus to end the inning. The Chiefs allowed just two base runners over the final two innings to complete the shutout. Steven Grife threw a spotless eighth inning and Jordan Latham forced the Snappers to strand a runner at second with a strikeout and comebacker in the ninth. McNutt tied his career-high with seven strikeouts over three innings while allowing two hits and walking two. Jung (1-0) picked up his first professional win with four shutout innings of one-hit ball in which he walked two and struck out one. Grife's inning included a pair of punch-outs while Latham allowed a hit and struck out one for his second save of the season.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Greg Rohan (DH) - Rohan collected hits in his first three at-bats and drove in both of the Chiefs runs. His single in the first scored Valdez for a 1-0 lead and he added a second RBI with a sixth-inning hit. He leads the Chiefs with three RBI on the season.
