Walleye Hold Wings at Bay for Second Straight Night
October 10, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- The Toledo Walleye used goals from Kyle Bonis and Mike Leone to catapult themselves to a 2-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night at Wings West.
The Walleye got on the board first with a power play tally from Kyle Bonis (1st) at 11:14 of the opening frame. Bonis lifted a wrister from the left circle over the glove of Kalamazoo starting goaltender, Joel Martin.
Toledo built upon their lead midway through the middle stanza as Michael Leone (1st) raced off the bench towards a net front scramble and chipped in a loose puck, giving the Walleye a 2-0 edge with 7:40 remaining in the second.
With under a minute to play in the second period and freshly on their third power play opportunity of the night, Charlie Vasaturo (1st) one-timed a feed from Alex Mallet past Toledo goaltender Jake Patterson, pulling the Wings to within one.
Though Kalamazoo produced a series of chances late in the contest, Toledo were able to withstand the barrage and escape with a 2-1 victory.
In separate news, the Wings trimmed their preseason roster today with the release of Erik Higby from an ECHL contract. Also released were Jackson Brewer, Alex Carpenter, Nathan Sheriff, and Stuart Stefan from their tryout agreements.
