Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - The Walleye came back in dramatic fashion in Friday night's contest and looked to start another winning streak with a follow-up victory on Saturday. Hosting Trenton again, the home team started off hot and picked up right where it left off from the night before.

The first was not as high-scoring as last night's opening period, but the sell-out crowd watched as the Walleye took a late lead. All-Star defenseman JC Sawyer took a pass in the left circle and ripped a whistling wrister to the top corner of the goal to beat Devils' goalie Dave Caruso. The arena erupted as Sawyer's 14th goal crossed the red line with 1:38 left in the first.

The second period was a see-saw affair that set the tone for the third period. Trenton tied the contest when Jack Combs found the back of the net with a wrap-around at 4:23. Combs went behind the net and looked to pass, but instead just jammed the puck through the pads of Alec Richards.

Toledo answered to take the lead to the intermission. A series of quick passes from Mike Hennen then to Bryan Ewing found JC Sawyer open in front of the crease for his second goal of the game. His team-leading 15th goal went through the legs of Caruso at 15:58.

Meanwhile, the Walleye defense was in full-force, including goaltender Alec Richards. With the score 2-1, Richards was tested often, but rose the occasion each time to preserve the lead. With 10:15 left in regulation, Trenton came in to the Toledo zone and worked the puck behind the net. A pass off the boards went across the crease, opposite to Richards, where Ryan Ginand was wide open. Ginand took the shot for what looked like a certain goal, but Richards dove with exceptional quickness and robbed the Devils with his glove to keep the Toledo lead.

Lucas County Arena erupted even as Trenton Poured on the pressure. Toledo would add insurance with a goal from Bryan Ewing at 15:05. Mike Hedden worked the boards after a dump-in by Malcolm MacMillan. Hedden passed at the perfect moment to Ewing, who shot at Caruso's stick side for the 3-1 lead.
