Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (19-13-1-2=41, 1st East Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, were defeated by the Cincinnati Cyclones, 4-1, at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Royals scored first but were only able to muster a total of seventeen shots, as the Cyclones bounced back to take a first period lead and then shut Reading down. Goaltender Matt Dalton (Loss, 10-8-0-1; 30/34) suffered his third straight loss at the Sovereign Center. Cincinnati's Jeremy Smith (11-7-0-1; 16/17) gave up an early power play goal to the Royals, but made all the stops he had to from that point forward to pick up the win. Reading scored on their first power play chance of the game (1-5); while the Cyclones scored on the back-end of a double minor assessed against the Royals early in the first (1-8).
Reading scored 3:07 into the game on the Royals' first power play chance of the game. Marc Cavosie fired a perfect cross-ice pass from wide on the right wing side to the top of the crease where Olivier Labelle redirected it into the net for his tenth goal of the year. Cincinnati tied the game at the 6:57 mark of the first on their first power play sequence of the game. Fifty seconds after the Royals' goal, Dinos Stamoulis was assessed with a double minor for interference and unsportsmanlike conduct-the back end of which resulted when Stamoulis dropped his gloves looking to engage Brett Motherwell in a fight, but Motherwell did not respond in kind. Although the Royals killed off the front end of the double-minor, Cincinnati broke through when Barrett Ehgoetz' shot from the high slot slipped through Dalton's pads with one minute remaining on the penalty kill for his fourteenth of the year.
The Cyclones got what proved to be the game winner at the 14:49 mark of the first, when a misplayed puck on the wall high inside the defensive zone gave Cincinnati's Brett Robinson a chance to steal, walk into the right circle and feed Matt Pierce in the low slot. Pierce ripped a snap shot low stick side for his seventeenth of the year. After a scoreless second, the Cyclones got some insurance early in the third when another failed clear from the defensive zone ended when Maxime Lacroix hacked at one from out in front that somehow trickled through the crease and across the goal line just inside the right pipe. The Royals, who were held at bay for the vast majority of the game, tried to press late, but Pierce finished on a two-on-none with 2:06 remaining to ice this one for the Cyclones.
The Royals return to action tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, January 10, 2010 @ 5:05 pm) when the Florida Everblades visit the Sovereign Center for the first time this year. The Royals will honor several area racing legends during âRace Night'. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 4:35 pm.
