Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem pitchers walked nine batters and surrendered 12 hits in aiding Kinston to an 8-5 victory over the Warthogs on Monday night at Ernie Shore Field. The outcome snaps Winston-Salem's five-game winnings streak, while bringing to an end the Indians eight-game losing streak. It also moves Kinston to within 2.5 games of Winston-Salem in the chase for the second half playoff berth with 7 games to play.
After Clevelan Santeliz struck out the first two batters of the game, Carlos Santana walked and scored on a double by Jared Goedert to put Kinston in front 1-0. Winston-Salem answered in the bottom of the second when Brett Bonvechio and Francisco Hernandez hit RBI doubles to give the Warthogs a 2-1 lead.
Lack of control by Santeliz sparked a four-run third inning for Kinston. Santeliz loaded the bases with no outs by walking the first three batters. Carlos Rivero collected a run-scoring sac fly to knot the score at two. One batter later, Jerad Head lined a two-run triple to the right field corner and Brian Juhl followed with an RBI single to give the Indians a 5-2 lead.
Down 6-2 in the fifth inning, the Warthogs trimmed their deficit to one as John Shelby III smacked a two-run single and Salvador Sanchez brought a run across with a single to make the score 6-5 in favor of the K-Tribe.
Winston-Salem would get no closer as walks continued to hamper the pitching staff. Reliever Matt Zaleski gave up a single and a pair of two-out walks in the seventh inning to load the bases. Niuman Romero made him pay with a two-run single to extend the Indians lead to 8-5.
Kinston starting pitcher Carlton Smith allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings to garner the win. Vinnie Pestano retired the side in order in the ninth inning to notch his 8th save of the season.
Santeliz only lasted 2 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs on four hits with five walks to suffer the loss. In 14 starts with the Warthogs, the 21-year-old has handed out more free passes than hits in half of those outings.
These two clubs will square off in the second of this four-game series on Tuesday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will send RHP Clevelan Santeliz (3-5, 4.47) to the mound, while the Indians will counter with LHP Shawn Nottingham (2-4, 4.60). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
