19-year old superstar Jason Heyward was the #14 overall selection in the 2007 draft by the Atlanta Braves. He was tabbed as the #2 rated prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization according to Baseball America prior to the 2008 season. The right fielder tore apart the South Atlantic League in 120 games this season. He ranked second in the circuit in batting average (.323), fourth in on-base percentage (.388) and first in runs scored (88). Heyward also connected on 11 home runs and 52 RBIs. He notched a season-high 24-game on-base streak from April 6th through May 1st.

Following his selection in the 2007 draft, Heyward began his professional career in the Gulf Coast League. In eight games, he hit .296 with a home run and five RBIs. At the end of the season, he was promoted to Danville (R), where he went 5-16 (.313) in four games in the Appalachian League.

Heyward broke onto the national scene at Henry County High School in McDonough, Georgia. As a junior, he led them to their first ever state title. Then, as a senior, he batted .520 with eight home runs in only 52 at-bats.

The physical specimen (6'4", 220) was called up to Myrtle Beach to help bolster the club for the playoff push. He is expected to fill the void left by Willie Cabrera, who was promoted to Mississippi (AA) on August 21st. The Pelicans may have to shuffle the outfield as Heyward is a natural right fielder whereas Cabrera played in left field for Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans remain one player short of the maximum 25-man roster. In addition, the Pelicans have three players currently on the Disabled List.
