Woodbridge, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, played into a scoreless tie through half of regulation Monday night only to fall 10-0 to the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium. The Avalanche (24-39) mustered just four hits against Potomac (34-29) starter Hassan Pena who struck five out.

The Nationals began the fifth inning by successfully loafing the bases. With one down, Michael Martinez stroked a single to right field to score Michael Burgess. Then, Dan Lyons was hit by a Corey Bass pitch to bring another home. Immediately after, Andrew Lefave socked a two-run single to right to plate a pair and end Bass' night. With Jay Pacella in, a pair of wild pitches scored Lyons and Dee Brown topped the scoring with a single to left field.

Meantime, Hassan Pena stymied the Avalanche all night. The righty struck a career high nine batters out while allowing just four hits in seven innings and two-thirds.

Offensively, the Avalanche's Greg Buchanan provided a pair of hits. He's the owner of three of Salem's last six hits.

The Avs P-Nats meet again Tuesday night with Salem's Erick Abreu facing Potomac's Jeff Mandel.
