Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Andrew (Ace) Walker had to make an adjustment after the second inning on Sunday afternoon. It worked to perfection.
Meanwhile, Walker got plenty of help from his defense and his hitters and the Goldeyes (10-7) disposed of the visiting Gary SouthShore (7-9) RailCats 6-2 in front of 4,889 spectators at Shaw Park.
Walker threw seven complete innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits as he picked up his first win of the season and lowered his ERA to 4.05. But Walker was quick to point out that his team's defense, combined with a personal adjustment to his own mechanics, were the reasons for his tremendous outing.
"It was all good today," Walker said, as he signed autographs for fans after the game. "In that second inning when they (Gary) put those three solid singles together, I knew there was something wrong. So after the inning, I made an adjustment to my mechanics and all was good after that.
"But how good was that defense behind me' Those guys were great today (no errors after five on Saturday night). And look at the difference it made in the game. After four hours and 20 minutes on Saturday, we get it done in two and a half hours today (Sunday) and give up only allow a couple of runs. Great defense makes a big difference for me. And that umpire (Bryan Childe) was awesome. He was the best umpire we've had in a long time. That was a great job today."
While Walker was holding back the RailCats bats, the Goldeyes came alive on offense.
Winnipeg scored a run in the first when leadoff man Price Kendall walked, stole second, went to third on a long fly ball off the bat of Kody Kaiser to right and then scored on a sacrifice by from Brian Myrow.
After Gary tied it at 1-1, the Goldeyes picked up two more runs in the bottom of the second as Victor Ferrante walked and then Alan Rick hit a monster home run over the right-field wall.
Then, with the Goldeyes leading 3-2 in the eighth, Wes Long singled, Myrow singled and then Luis Alen singled to drive home Long and send Myrow to third. After Alen stole second, Ferrante delivered a solid single to left-centre that scored both Myrow and Alen and put the game on ice.
After Walker (1-1, 4.05 ERA) finished the seventh, Kevin Light came on and got the RailCats 1-2-3 in the eighth and then Chad Benefield got three quick outs in the ninth as the Fish won their second straight game and improved to 10-7 on the season.
Monday night, the Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will meet in the first game of a three-game series. Lefty Chris Salamida (1-0, 4.60 ERA) will get the start for the Goldeyes while righthander Alex Kaminsky (0-0, 4.80) will toe the slab for Fargo.
Tickets are available at Ticketmaster or at the box office at Shaw Park. The game can also be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290 at 7 p.m.
