Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX---Former Major League hurler Greg Smith stiffled the Captains' bats for the second straight day as Grand Prairie topped Shreveport-Bossier 3-1, sweeping the Captains in the three game series. Smith (2-1) went six innings, allowing just two hits and one run, while walking one and striking out three. The Captains' only run of the game came on rookie left fielder Alex Cowart's solo homer to left in the sixth inning off Smith.

Captains pitcher Cody Railsback, pitching in his first game since having Tommy John surgery late last summer, went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out two. Shreveport-Bossier also played their second straight errorless game, completing a season-high five double plays.

Railsback gave up two runs in the first but would settle in. He gave up three straight Grand Prairie singles with one out in the first Greg Porter's RBI single scored David Espinosa with the game's first run. Two batters later, Tyler Henley launched a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cesar Nicolas and making it 2-0 AirHogs.

Nicolas had another strong offensive night, going three-for-three and reaching base all four times he came to the plate. The AirHogs third baseman went six-for-eleven in the thee-game set.

Cowart's homer in the sixth cut the lead to 2-1, but Grand Prairie would get the run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Jake Taylor RBI single off Captains reliever Mark Haynes.

Andres Rodriguez would extend his hit streak to 13 games with a seventh-inning single. After Palmer Karr Jr. hit into a double play, Uriak Marquez would single, giving him hits in 14 straight games, though the Captains would fail to score in the inning. Shreveport-Bossier went down in order in the eighth. In the ninth, Bryan Sabatella hit a one-out double off AirHogs closer Jon Hunton, but he would get Rodriguez and Karr on ground outs to short to end the game for his sixth save of the year.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 9-8 on the year, 2.5 games behind the first-place AirHogs. The Captains return home to Shreveport tomorrow for the start of a six-game series with the El Paso Diablos at Fair Grounds Field. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:05. It is the first of this year's Jose Cuervo Margarita Mondays, where fans can enjoy $3 margarita's.
