St. Paul Saints News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS (May 29, 2011) - One series down, three more to go, but so far the 13-game roadtrip couldn't have gotten off to a better start as the St. Paul Saints swept the Kansas City T-Bones, winning 8-6 on Sunday evening at Community America Ballpark.
For the second time in the three game series every Saint collected at least one hit as they wound up with 15, for a three game total of 50. The two biggest hits came in the seventh after the Saints saw a 6-2 lead disappear. Ole Sheldon stroked a solo homer to left, his third of the season to give the Saints a 7-6 lead. Two batters later Brandon Tripped hit his third of the season, a solo shot to straight away center. Tripp had his fourth consecutive three-hit game going 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
While the offense was a major story, the relief effort of Alberto Rolon was the real story on Sunday. After Saints starter Donald Brandt gave up six runs in 5.0 innings, his most in nearly two years, Rolon settled things down. He pitched 3.0 shutout innings allowing one hit while striking out three to earn his second victory of the season.
The Saints jumped all over T-Bones starter Devin Anderson, in the first. Adam Frost led off with a single and stole second. Justin Snyder walked and on ball four, Frost advanced to third on a passed ball. Shane Costa knocked in Frost to make it 1-0. Two batters later Jason Cooper made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly and Tripp followed with an RBI single.
The T-Bones answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1, but the Saints wasted little time in answering on an unusual play. With Jonathan Van Every at second and one out Frost flew out to deep center and Van Every tagged and went to third and didn't stop, scoring on the fly ball to make it 4-1.
With the score 4-2 in the third Richard Mercado hit a two-run bomb to left, his first of the season, to make it 6-2. Mercado went 3-4 with the homer, two RBI and a run scored.
The T-Bones proved they were up to the task against Brandt, who has won 18 consecutive decisions dating back to last season. In the fourth they got a homer from Brian Joynt, his second of the game and third of the season to make it 6-3. Later in the inning Aharon Eggleston singled home a run to make it 6-4.
In the fifth the T-Bones tied it at six when Ray Sadler hit a fly ball to left that got caught up in the wind that was blowing out, for a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.
The Saints now travel to Potter County Memorial Stadium for a four game series against the Amarillo Sox at 7:05 p.m. on Monday. The Saints send LHP Alain Quijano (1-1, 6.52) to the mound against Sox RHP Matt Elliott (1-0, 9.00). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
