Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The American Hockey League announced today that Providence Bruins center Vladimir Sobotka has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 18, 2009. Sobotka recorded three goals, three assists and a plus-four rating in two games, both P-Bruins home wins.
On Friday, Sobotka scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in Providence's 4-2 win over the Lowell Devils. His assist came on an Andy Wozniewski power play goal. Sobotka also took a game-high eight shots of Providence's 42. After an off-day on Saturday, the P-Bruins got back into action on Sunday and routed the Portland Pirates 7-2 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sobotka was named the game's top star after scoring two goals and adding two assists for a game-best four points, while registering another game-high six shots. The third-year pro finished the contest with a plus-three rating and a power play assist on Wozniewski's go-ahead strike.
Following Sunday's win, Sobotka was recalled for the first time this season by the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins, along with linemate Brad Marchand and fellow forward Guillaume Lefebvre. Should Sobotka return to Providence this season, he will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to a P-Bruins home game in recognition of his AHL honor.
The 22-year-old native of Trebic, Czech Republic, earned at least one point in all six Providence games this season for a total of 10 points (4g, 6a), good for second on the P-Bruins in scoring and a third-place tie for the AHL-lead. In his career, Sobotka has appeared in 73 regular season NHL games, totaling 12 points (2g, 10a), along with six Stanley Cup playoff contests, where he has scored two goals. In the AHL, Sobotka has suited up for 68 regular season games, registering 74 points (34g, 40a), and 20 Calder Cup playoff games, where he recorded 17 points (2g, 15a). The third-year pro was drafted by Boston 106th overall in round four of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
