Senators And Pirates Visit This Weekend

October 19, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club heads to Wilkes- Barre/Scranton Friday to conclude a three-game road trip before returning home this weekend. The BEARS will play host to the Binghamton Senators and Portland Pirates this weekend at Giant Center, just the third and fourth home games of the young season for the defending Calder Cup Champions. HERSHEY holds a share of first place in the East Division heading into the third week of the regular season.

The appearance by Portland this Sunday is the only time the Pirates, the top developmental affiliate of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, will be in central PA this season. Binghamton will come to town Saturday after already dropping two games this season at home against the BEARS. Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.

A record setting night: Although the game would eventually go into overtime, the BEARS set a franchise record Saturday for the most shots on goal in a single period. HERSHEY fired 27 second period shots at Binghamton goaltender Andy Chiodo en route to a 3-2 overtime win over the Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The game marked the first time in 13 years that the BEARS fired 25 or more shots in a single frame.

Giroux lights up Binghamton: Alexandre Giroux starts the new week with a team high five goals, four of which have come against the Binghamton Senators. Giroux scored two in the first period last Saturday against the Senators, and followed up that effort with two more at Broome County. The finale of the four goals came in overtime Saturday as the game-winner.

Practice schedule: HERSHEY will skate at GIANT Center Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. for practice. The BEARS will have a brief pre-game skate Friday before heading to Wilkes- Barre/Scranton for Friday night's game with the Penguins.

Gordon and Giroux at the top: Even the loss of linemate Keith Aucoin to Washington last week hasn't slowed down Alexandre Giroux and Andrew Gordon. The duo are tied for the team lead with 10 points each, with Gordon recording at least a point in each of HERSHEY'S first six games this season.

Washington update: After a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville Saturday night at Verizon Center, the Capitals are off now until Thursday night. Washington plays at Atlanta Thursday night against the Thrashers before heading to Long Island Saturday to play the New York Islanders. Bruce Boudreau's club carries a two-game winning streak into the new week. Alex Ovechkin has nine goals in just eight games to begin the season.
