Manitoba Moose News Release

Moose goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 31 shots on Monday night to carry his club to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Copps Coliseum. Sergei Shirokov opened the scoring for the Moose while Nolan Baumgartner earned the game-winner in Manitoba's first overtime victory this season. The Moose and Bulldogs will face each other in a rematch on Tuesday night.

A mere 12 seconds into the contest, Moose winger Pierre-Cedric Labrie was called for high-sticking and Hamilton benefited from the game's first powerplay. Although the home team didn't score on their opening man-advantage, they tallied two shots on goaltender Cory Schneider before the Moose recorded one.

After the midway point of the first period, Shaun Belle took a holding penalty, but the Bulldogs resisted that powerplay to keep the game at zero.

At 12:33 Hamilton's Ryan White was awarded a penalty shot but net minder Cory Schneider bailed out the Moose with a blocker save to keep the game scoreless.

Back-to-back penalties to the Moose resulted in an extensive five-on-three for the Bulldogs that would carry into the second stanza. Hamilton cracked 10 shots on the PP, but Manitoba's penalty killers were flawless and kept the puck out of their zone for the majority of the disadvantage.

9:02 into the second period Guillaume Desbiens and Eric Neilson dropped their gloves for a lengthy battle to the right of Schneider's net. Neilson threw a few solid punches before Desbiens wrestled the right-winger to the ground. Both players sat out five minutes for the fight, while Desbiens was handed an additional interference minor along with 10-minute misconduct.

After 40 minutes of play, the Bulldogs led in the shot department, 21-10, but neither team was able to record their opening goal.

Although the home team owned the shot clock, the visitors were the first to make one count. At the seven minute mark of the third, rookie Sergei Shirokov fired a shot from inside the red circle and beat Sanford over his glove to open the scoring.

Moments later, the Bulldogs knotted the game back up. In a textbook four way passing play, Ryan Russell fired the bullet under Schneider's pad to get his club back on even-ground.

The Bulldogs offence was on full-force in the final minutes as they broke the 30 shot mark. Schneider showed off his flexibility and reflexes with a handful of stellar saves to protect the tie.

With 1:38 left in the game, the Moose were granted a powerplay when P.K. Subban was locked up for slashing. The Dogs did an excellent job of clearing the puck on every occasion they could and the game was forced into overtime to determine a winner.

Overtime Both teams came out flying in the fourth period to earn the win in this hard fought battle. At 3:49 Curtis Sanford made the initial save on Nolan Baumgartner's shot but the goaltender fell back into the net and took the puck with him to give the Moose a 2-1 victory at the Copps Coliseum.
