
Vipers Split Weekend Series with Idaho Stampede

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-1) fell to the Idaho Stampede (1-1) 112-101 tonight at State Farm Arena. The Vipers split the weekend series. On Friday, RGV opened the 2015-16 season with a 110-106 win over Idaho.
Will Cummings led the Vipers with 26 points and shot 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Chris Walker came off the bench with a double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds. Houston Rockets assignee K.J. McDaniels and Jaron Johnson each added 14 points.
Jeff Ayers led Idaho with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Fields also added 28 points. Treveon Graham chipped in 15 points, and Justin Manns scored 12 points and shot 5-for-5 from the field.
Putney made the first basket of the game with an alley-oop dunk assisted by Jaron Johnson. Ayres responded with a jump shot to put Idaho on the board. Idaho. The game tied three times before Idaho used a 9-2 to run to take a 16-9 lead. The Stampede led by seven points twice during the first quarter. However, with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter, Cummings made a layup to send the Vipers on their own 13-0 run to close the first quarter ahead 30-24.
RGV held on to the lead throughout the second quarter. The team's largest lead of the game was 38-27 at the 8:04 mark. At the half, the Vipers held a 53-44 advantage.
Throughout the third quarter, Idaho fought back to take a 78-77 lead with less than a second remaining in the quarter. During the third quarter the Vipers were outscored 36-24. Idaho continued to remain in control through the remainder of the game. Ayres scored 15 of his 28 total points in the fourth quarter to lead Idaho past the Vipers.
The Vipers are back in action at home Thursday, Nov. 19 when the team hosts the Oklahoma City Blue at 7 p.m. (CST) at State Farm Arena. Throughout the month of November, fans can bring four non-perishable food items to the State Farm Arena box office pregame in exchange for one free ticket. Donations will benefit the Salvation Army.
