
Vipers Split Series with Bakersfield Jam

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (26-21) fell 119-115 to the Bakersfield Jam (22-25) tonight at State Farm Arena. The Vipers split the weekend series with the Jam after winning Friday night's contest 139-125.
Jarvis Threatt led the Vipers with 27 points off the bench. Houston Rockets assignee Montrezl Harrell added 26 points and 13 rebounds. Jaron Johnson scored 21 points, followed by Will Cummings with 15 points. Raphiael Putney tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Terrico White and Askia Booker each scored 31 points to lead the Jam. Xavier Silas contributed 22 points. Cory Jefferson tallied 14 points and Kyle Casey added 10 rebounds.
Casey made the first bucket of the game with a three-point shot for the Jam. Putney tied the game at 5 points with a three-pointer with 9:31 on the clock. Jefferson responded with a jump shot to set Bakersfield ahead 7-5. The Jam held on to the lead for the remainder of the half. At the end of the first quarter, Bakersfield held a 29-24 advantage.
The Vipers fought back throughout the second quarter to outscore the Jam 34-31. Harrell and Threatt each scored 11 points apiece in the second frame to lead the Vipers. With 9:31 on the clock, Putney made a three-point shot to close RGV's deficit to 33-32. However, the Jam built its lead up to 52-41 with 4:37 remaining in the half. The Vipers ended the first half on a 10-2 run to end the half trailing 60-58.
A shot from beyond the arc by Cummings gave RGV its first lead of the game 63-60 near the start of the third quarter. The Vipers and Jam exchanged the lead twice in the third quarter. However, Bakersfield ended the period ahead 85-81.
RGV held a one-point lead twice early in the final frame, but Bakersfield got away with the win. Booker scored 22 of his 31 one total points in the fourth quarter to keep Bakersfield in control.
The Vipers hit the road next week for a pair of road games versus the Oklahoma City Blue. On Tuesday, March 29, tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (CST) and will broadcast live on ESPNU. Then, on Thursday, March 31 tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CST).
RGV returns home for the final home game of the regular-season Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m. (CST) at State Farm Arena.
