Vincent Sparks TinCaps to Victory
May 10, 2024 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - In his first start as a TinCap, Colton Vincent sparked Fort Wayne to a 5-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers affiliate) on Friday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.
Vincent, a 24-year-old who was added to the team's roster by the Padres on April 30, went 3-for-3 with a run scored and what proved to be the game-winning RBI that broke a 3-3 score in the top of the ninth inning. He was also hit by a pitch. Vincent started Friday in left field, though his primary position is catcher. San Diego signed him last summer out of Florida State University. He made his High-A debut last Saturday as a pinch-hitter.
Vincent's single in the ninth scored right fielder Tyler Robertson, who led the frame off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Colton Bender. Later in the inning, shortstop Nik McClaughry drove in Homer Bush Jr., who pinch-ran for Vincent.
Fort Wayne (11-20) originally trailed, 2-0, as West Michigan (14-17) scored an unearned run in each of the first two innings against starter Henry Baez (No. 30 Padres prospect). But the TinCaps rallied back with a run in the fourth thanks to a two-out RBI single by center fielder Lucas Dunn. The visitors took the lead in the fifth as McClaughry ripped an RBI double and catcher Anthony Vilar plated Vincent from third base with a grounder.
The Whitecaps equalized in the sixth. Nevertheless, over 5 2/3 innings, Baez matched his career high with eight strikeouts. Francis Peña followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Mitchell Miller registered his first save of the season in the ninth.
Next Game: Saturday, May 11 @ West Michigan (7:15pm)
TinCaps Probable Starter: RHP Dylan Lesko (No. 3 Padres prospect)
Whitecaps Probable Starter: RHP Jaden Hamm (Midwest League Pitcher of the Month for April)
