Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Clinton left-hander Anthony Vasquez made quick work of the Beloit lineup over eight innings and a clutch first-inning single by Brandon Bantz gave him early support as the LumberKings snapped a three-game slide with a 5-1 win over the Snappers on Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field. The game lasted just one hour and 53 minutes.

Vasquez (W, 1-2) threw 95 pitches, 67 for strikes as he carved through the Snappers' order. Only Aaron Hicks was able to reach against him, singling in the fourth and seventh innings. Hicks scored Beloit's only run following a two-base throwing error by Vasquez as Brian Dozier drove him in with an RBI groundout.

Meanwhile, the LumberKings got to right-hander Liam Hendriks early. Hendriks, who entered the game with the league's second-lowest ERA (0.64), gave up singles to Matt Cerione and Vinnie Catricala in the first inning. With two outs, Bantz lined a single to right-center, plating both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Clinton would score twice more against Hendriks in the fourth. Bantz again got it started, lining a double to shallow left. Kalian Sams was then hit by a pitch, and a throwing error by catcher Josmil Pinto on a check behind Sams at first base allowed Bantz to score. Sams would score later in the inning on an RBI groundout from Mario Martinez.

The Kings tacked on one more run against right-hander Ben Tootle in the eighth. Nick Franklin singled, stole second and third and scored on Catricala's line double to right-center.

Hendriks (L, 2-1) allowed a season-high four runs (three earned) on four hits over 6.0 innings, walking one while striking out seven.

Right-hander Daniel Cooper pitched a non-save ninth for Clinton, working around a one-out single by James Beresford to end the game.

Bantz (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Catricala (2-for-4, double, RBI) led the way for the LumberKings. Hicks finished 2-for-4 with a run scored for Beloit.

The LumberKings (12-16) head to the Quad Cities to begin a three-game weekend series against the River Bandits. Right-hander Tyler Blandford (0-2, 4.50) is slated to make his sixth start, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
