Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (May 6, 2010) - The season-high crowd of 2,346 on Honor Roll Day at Community Field was treated to some on-field fireworks, but not of the offensive variety. Burlington Bees manager Jim Gabella and first baseman Fernando Cruz were both ejected in a 7-4 loss to the Kane County Cougars on Thursday afternoon.

Tensions rose when Joey Lewis was called out on strikes in the bottom of the sixth. Lewis asked for an appeal on his check swing, but was not granted one by home plate umpire Gus Curtis. In the top of the seventh, Curtis elected to appeal a check swing by Kane County's Mike Gilmartin. This brought a comment from Gabella, perched on the top step of the third base dugout, and Curtis promptly raised his right arm to dismiss the Burlington skipper from the game.

A lengthy face-to-face discussion followed, but Gabella would soon have company in the Bees clubhouse. After Gilmartin reached base on a walk, Cruz made a comment to base umpire Jeff Woods that resulted in an ejection of his own, and Juan Graterol took over at first base for the remainder of the game.

The frustrating day was capped by the Bees' sixth straight loss to Kane County, dating back to a three-game series in early April at Geneva's Elfstrom Stadium.

Dan Straily (W, 3-1) became the second consecutive Cougars starter to shut out the Bees for six innings. The Bees managed just one run in 20 innings against the Kane County starters over the course of the three game series.

Tyler Sample (L, 1-1) took the loss after being knocked around for five runs on six hits in six innings. The righty struck out six and walked three. He allowed a three-run home run to Leonardo Gil in the fourth that put the Cougars in front for good.

The Bees plated all four of their runs in ninth inning, and Wil Myers struck out to end the game with the tying run in the on-deck circle. Despite the punchout, Myers was the Bees' leader offensively, reaching base three times on a double and two walks. Rene Oriental extended his hitting streak to seven games with a ninth inning single.

The Bees hit the road for a six-game road trip starting with tomorrow evening's contest against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Join Nick Devlin for the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:10 on News Radio 1490 KBUR with first pitch following at 6:30.
