Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio - Lake County reliever Cory Burns pitched out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the ninth inning to lead the Captains to a 2-1 win over the Dayton Dragons in the completion of a suspended game that began on Wednesday. The Captains improved to 19-8 with the win. Dayton fell to 13-13 with the loss.
Trailing 2-1 starting the ninth inning, the Dragons put together a serious threat when Josh Garton singled to center, Andrew Means singled to left, and Mark Fleury walked to load the bases. But Burns struck out Frank Pfister and Efrain Contreras. Burns got the count to 1-2 on Dayton's Jordan Wideman before throwing a breaking ball in the dirt. Wideman tried to check his swing as the pitch got past catcher Roberto Perez and Garton raced in from third to score. But Wideman remained at home plate and on appeal, he was ruled to have swung at the pitch for strike three. Perez threw to first to complete the strikeout, negating the run by Garton, to end the game.
Ben Carlson's two-out single brought in Argenis Martinez from second base in the bottom of the eighth with the tie-breaking run for Lake County. The inning began with the Dragons leading 1-0. Casey Frawley led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. With Kyle Smith at the plate, Frawley broke for home on an attempted suicide squeeze play. Smith missed the bunt attempt, but the pitch glanced off the glove of Wideman, the Dayton catcher, and Frawley scored to tie the game. Carlson's single gave Lake County the lead.
The Dragons scored the game's first run in the eighth inning. With one out, Efrain Contreras' bunt was mishandled by Lake County pitcher Rob Bryson for an error. Wideman singled to center to move Contreras to second. With two outs, Didi Gregorius singled to center to bring in Contreras and make it 1-0.
The Dragons will play Lake County in the regularly-scheduled game later tonight. J.C. Sulbaran (2-0, 3.94) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Danny Salazar (0-1, 6.62). The Dragons next home game is Monday, May 10 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.
