South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Lansing, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks were held to just one hit on Thursday night, losing 5-0 to the Lansing Lugnuts for their second shutout loss of the 2010 season.

Lansing starter Evan Crawford (WP, 1-1) was in control from the beginning, retiring the first 10 batters he faced. David Nick reached on an error in the fourth and moved to second on a walk to Matt Davidson, but that would be the only runner the Silver Hawks got into scoring position all night long.

Errol Hollinger had the lone South Bend hit in the fifth, a clean single into center field to lead off the inning. Hollinger never left first as Crawford got the next three outs - his final inning on the mound - and the Silver Hawks never had another base runner. Matt Wright (ND) took over and pitched two perfect innings, followed by two more perfect innings by Dustin Antolin (ND) to complete the one-hitter.

South Bend starter Eric Smith (LP, 3-2) battled his way through 4.1 innings on a night when he didn't have his best stuff. A quick worker who doesn't go deep in counts, Smith was struggling through a number of pitches and went to full counts on nine of the 20 batters he faced.

Even still, Smith got through the first two innings unscathed before running into trouble in the third. Smith walked Chris Hopkins with one out, balked him to second, and watched him score on Ryan Schimpf's RBI single to right. After an error and a groundout, Mark Sobolewski had a RBI single to make it 2-0 Lugnuts after three.

After a 1-2-3 fourth inning, Smith had trouble again in the fifth. Schimpf had a one-out single, and moved to second on Smith's second balk of the game. Ryan Goins then walked to put runners at first and second and end Smith's night on the mound. Chris Odegaard (ND) was called in from the bullpen and issued a walk to load the bases. After a strikeout, Sean Ochinko lined a double down the right field line, scoring Schimpf and Goins for the 4-0 lead.

Lansing added another run against Odegaard in the sixth on doubles by A.J. Jimenez and Schimpf for the 5-0 lead. Schimpf finished the night 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Lansing offensive attack.

South Bend returns to Coveleski Stadium to open a six game home stand Friday night against the Dayton Dragons. Game time on Friday is 6:30 PM Eastern Time with RHP Chase Anderson (1-3, 3.20 ERA) starting for the Silver Hawks and RHP Josh Ravin (1-1, 1.82 ERA) taking the hill for Dayton. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
