Shane Dyer Throws Seven No-Hit Innings

Bowling Green, KY - For the third time in franchise history, a Hot Rods starting pitcher entered and left a game without giving up a hit. On Thursday night Shane Dyer dominated the Fort Wayne TinCaps by hurling seven no-hit innings in a 1-0 Bowling Green victory. His tremendous feat matches a similar effort by former Hot Rods pitcher Matt Moore, who threw seven no-hit innings on June 6, 2009 at Asheville, NC.

Dyer's outing didn't have the tell-tale signs of a no-hit effort as the righty hit a batter in the first inning before allowing a walk and hitting a second TinCap in the second. After getting out of the two-runner jam in the second, Dyer found his groove, retiring 13 straight hitters through the end of the sixth inning. The only base-runner he allowed after the second was a lead-off ground ball turned into an error by shortstop Robi Estrada in the seventh.

In total, Dyer worked seven innings, issuing one walk, hitting two batters, and striking out a career-high-tying eight. He threw 93 pitches, completing seven frames for the second straight start at home. In three starts at home the righty has allowed just one earned run in 19 total innings, good for a 0.47 ERA.

Bowling Green got the only offense it would need in the last of the third inning, coming on yet another two-out run. Estrada led off with a single and stole second base two batters later. That brought up Chris Murrill, who laced a single to left field to put the Hot Rods on top 1-0. The base hit produced a two-out run, giving the Hot Rods eight two-out tallies in their last four games.

After Dyer left, Kirby Yates came on and took the no-hitter into the night after striking out three batters on ten total pitches in the eighth. He began the final inning with two more K's before hitting Nate Freiman to put a runner at first base. That brought up Jason Hagerty, who nearly ended the game watching a fastball that just missed the outside corner. He took advantage of the close call by lacing a single into left field to break up the no-hitter.

Yates ended the game with another strikeout, reducing Jon Alia on four pitches. Over two innings, Yates allowed one base hit but recorded all six outs via strikeouts.

As for Dyer, he followed up Moore (seven innings) and Frank De Los Santos, who pitched five no-hit frames last August 27. Both Dyer and Moore pitched seven innings. Comparing their outings, Dyer had eight K's and one walk with two hit batters; Moore struck out a career-high 12, issuing two walks.

With the sweep of the TinCaps, the Hot Rods head back on the road for a six game trip beginning Friday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers). RHP Jason McEachern (0-4, 6.75) gets the ball against Whitecaps LHP Giovanni Soto (1-2, 2.59). First pitch on Friday night is at 5:35 PM CDT. The Hot Rods return home for a four game series against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) beginning Thursday, May 13. That night the Hot Rods celebrate the birthday of country music artist and Hootie and the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker with Hootie-palooza.
