
Errors hurt Kernels in 9-6 loss at Peoria

Peoria, IL - The Cedar Rapids Kernels committed four errors which led to three unearned runs in a 9-6 loss to the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field in Peoria on Wednesday. Kernels starter Fabio Martinez allowed four runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out six over six innings in a no-decision effort.
Casey Haerther led the Kernel offense, going 3-4 with a double and RBI and Jean Segura was 3-5 and hit his first home run of the season. Mike Trout went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI and Justin Bass went 1-4 with a run scored. Greg Rohan led the Chiefs, going 2-5 with 2 RBI and Mario Mercedes added 2 RBI.
The Kernels led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but the Chiefs roughed up Kernels reliever Kyle Hurst (3-1) for five runs (two earned) on four hits over 1.2 innings to tag Hurst with the loss. Peoria reliever Steven Grife (2-0) picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits over 2.1 innings.
