CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Louisville Bats dropped Friday night's series opener to the Charlotte Knights (39-33) by a 9-6 score at BB&T Ballpark. Josh VanMeter recorded his second straight three-hit game after returning to the Louisville lineup from the Cincinnati Reds.

The Bats (28-45) faced an early hurdle, with the Knights scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Only two of the runs were earned, with Louisville making its first of four errors on the night during the game's first batter. Right-hander Brad Markey (1-2, 7.85) tossed his second quality start in his fourth career start for Louisville, lasting 6.0 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one home run, walking one and striking out two on 103 pitches and 69 strikes.

Markey settled in after the opening frame, with Louisville's offense showing the resiliency it has all season long. The Bats cut the deficit in half in the top of the second on RBI hits from Juan Graterol and Sherman Johnson. The Bats proceeded to take a 5-4 lead with a three-run fourth, tying the game on a VanMeter RBI single and taking the lead on Charlotte's lone error of the night, a throwing error by third baseman Alcides Escobar.

VanMeter delivered yet again in the sixth, extending Louisville's lead to 6-4 with another hit, his third of the night. Charlotte would counter with a run of its own in the home half of the seventh, going into the ninth inning with a 6-5 Louisville advantage.

Right-hander Jimmy Herget came into the game for Louisville in the save opportunity, allowing the first three batters to reach base before Escobar would deliver the walk-off grand slam to give the Knights a 9-6 victory in the series opener.

Tomorrow, the Bats and Knights will play a scheduled day-night doubleheader, with first pitch of game one set for 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Keury Mella (4-6, 4.94) is set to go for Louisville, against former Louisville and current Charlotte left-hander Justin Nicolino (4-3, 4.75).
