Syracuse Mets News Release
Lawrenceville, GA - Arismendy Alcantara homered twice, including hitting Syracuse's first grand slam of the season as the Mets beat the Gwinnett Stripers, 10-6, on Friday night at Coolray Field. Rajai Davis added a home run and three RBIs for the Mets in the win.
Syracuse (36-37) used a pair of early home runs to jump out to the lead. Davis led off the top of the first inning by hitting the third pitch of the game over the left-field fence for a 1-0 lead. Then in the second, Alcantara hit a solo home run to right-center field to extend the lead to 2-0.
Gwinnett (39-33) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Jonathan Morales and Jack Lopez each singled. Ryan LaMarre followed with a two-run triple to right to score both runners and knot the game up, 2-2.
The Mets were quick to answer. In the fifth, Rubén Tejada singled, and Dilson Herrera and Danny Espinosa were both hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two outs. Alcantara followed with a grand slam to straightaway center, his second homer of the game to give the Mets a four-run lead, 6-2.
The Stripers got two runs closer in the bottom of the fifth. Luis Marté walked, and two batters later, Travis Demeritte hit his 14th home run of the season to cut the deficit to two, 6-4.
LaMarre brought the Stripers within a run in the sixth. With Lopez on second after a one-out double, LaMarre doubled to center to score Lopez, making it a 6-5 game.
But that was as close as Gwinnett would get. In the eighth, Espinosa singled, and Taijeron doubled with one out. Two batters later, Davis hit a two-out, two-run single to left to bring the score to 8-5. Then in the ninth, Tejada doubled to lead off, moved to third on a passed ball to the backstop, and scored on a wild pitch for a 9-5 Syracuse advantage. Not done yet, the Mets again loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. With two outs, Mets reliever Tim Peterson then came to the plate and worked a walk to force in another run to give Syracuse a 10-5 edge.
Gwinnett scored a run in the bottom of the ninth. LaMarre led off with a triple and scored on an Alex Jackson groundout for the final four-run margin of 10-6.
The Mets and Stripers meet again on Saturday night for the second game of their three-game series. RHP Ervin Santana is scheduled to pitch for Syracuse opposite RHP Bryce Wilson for Gwinnett. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
