Vancil Dominates As Freedom Win Again

YPSILANTI, MI - Preston Vancil became the first Freedom pitcher to record two complete game shutouts in 2009 as Florence blanked the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti 4-0 Wednesday night.
The win stretched the Freedom's streak to a season high seven games and pushed their record to 44-42.
Vancil (6-2) went the distance on 120 pitches, striking out eight along the way. The Sliders had only three base runners all night as Vancil walked one and surrendered only two hits.
Brad Hough knocked in the Freedom's first run of the game in the second inning after Dustin Koca singled and Johnny Welch doubled. Matt Stiffler grounded into a fielder's choice to plate Welch and make it 2-0 Freedom. Florence scored its third run of the inning on Tim Grogan's two-out RBI double that went off the base of the left field wall.
The only other run all night came in the top of the seventh. Jay Johnson drew a leadoff walk and was moved to third on Stiffler's double. One out later, Ryan Basham grounded out to third to plate the Freedom's fourth run.
That was more than enough for Vancil as the right-hander did not allow a base runner from the third through sixth innings. He finished the game in the ninth by sitting down the Sliders in order.
Florence goes for their second straight sweep Thursday night against the Sliders at 7:05 p.m. as Allan Donato (0-1) takes the ball for the Freedom at Oestrike Stadium.
