River City Rascals News Release
LOVES PARK, IL - Jason Lowey tied the Rascals' single season saves record with number 20 Tuesday night in a 5-2 victory over the RiverHawks at Road Ranger Stadium. The 2009 Rascals also moved into second place in franchise history with their 48th win, three shy of tying the franchise record of 51 set in 2004.
River City (48-36) did most of their damage early against Kyle Wright (10-4), scoring four runs in the first two frames. Chad Maddox and Ernie Banks both walked on four pitches with two outs in the first. Ryan Wehrle singled home Maddox and Caleb Fields botched a ball at third off Chris Colton's bat for a 2-0 lead.
The Rascals got two more tallies in the second, both unearned against Wright. Jorge Gutierrez led off with a single and moved to second on a Bryan Resnick sacrifice bunt, who also reached after Wright booted the ball and couldn't throw out Resnick. After a Scott Houin fielder's choice, JoJo Batten plated Gutierrez with a groundout to short and Maddox singled to give the Rascals a 4-0 advantage.
It proved to be enough for Stephen Flake (4-4), who earned his third win for the River City and fourth overall. Flake went six innings and allowed only four hits and two runs with six strikeouts.
Rockford (40-44) scored their only runs in the third off Flake and lost for the sixth straight game. Jono Brooks singled home Caleb Fields and Doug Sanders followed later in the frame to cut the lead to 4-2 at the time.
River City added another in the seventh against Wright, this time an earned run against the ERA leader. Houin singled, stole second and then moved to third on a Batten single. Maddox grounded into a double play, but Houin did score on the play for the 5-2 final.
Wright threw 131 pitches and went eight innings for the RiverHawks, surrendering five runs (two earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Lowey came on in the ninth and struck out two to tie Mike Benacka, who saved 20 games for the Rascals in 2007. Lowey is six shy of tying Matt Petty's Frontier League record of 26 saves for Windy City in '07.
Gutierrez went 2-4 with a run scored while Batten, Maddox and Wehrle each had a run batted in. Ernie Banks went 0-2 with three walks and saw his seven game hitting streak come to an end.
The Rascals assured themselves of only their fourth season without a losing record in 11 years and are right in the thick of gaining only their second playoff appearance. River City is now a half game out of the final wild card spot behind Windy City and a full game back of Southern Illinois for the West Division lead.
River City will try for their first three game winning streak in the second half tomorrow night in Rockford. Daniel Howard (5-5) will go opposite Fabian Gomez (4-3). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
