Windy City ThunderBolts News Release

Alex Kerins drove in all three Gateway Grizzlies runs including a two-run double in the top of the 13th inning, lifting Gateway to a 3-1 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts.

Both starting pitchers were fantastic as Matt Jernstad held Gateway scoreless through the first seven innings on just four hits. Nathan Melek was up to the task and even a little better as he held Windy City hitless through the first six innings of action.

The ThunderBolts got their first hit of the game in the seventh as leading off the inning, Kraig Binick singled to right. Nate Hall followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Windy City would break the scoreless tie as Binick stole third and came home as catcher Charlie Lisk sailed the throw into leftfield.

Armed with the lead, Matt Jernstad allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, but quickly erased him as Jernstad was able to pickoff Peter Tountas for the first out of the inning. Nick Hall came in after that and recorded the final two outs of the eighth.

In the ninth, Gateway would get Joe Agreste on via an error with one out. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Agreste would steal second. After a strikeout of Jareck West, Hall got to 2-2 on Kerins before the Gateway second baseman grounded a ball just past a diving J. T. Restko at first, scoring Agreste to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams would survive jams in extra innings, most notably Windy City working out of a bases loaded, one out spot in the 12th. Gateway would finally dent the scoreboard in the 13th as with two on, Kerins came up big again, driving a double over the head of Binick in left, scoring both Agreste and West for a 3-1 lead. Joel Boeschen then came in for the bottom of the innings and retired the ThunderBolts in order for his ninth save.

Scott Kelly (1-1) got the win for the Grizzlies while Zach Piccola (0-1) took the loss for Windy City

The series wraps up on Wednesday with a strong pitching matchup as Ross Stout (11-4, 2.74) goes to the mound for Windy City against Jamie Arneson (5-0, 3.28) for Gateway. It is a Bud Light Thirsty Thursday with 12 oz domestic draft beers costing just $1. It is also the ThunderBolts Idol finale. Windy City will be hosting a bus trip to Rockford for the final regular season home game on Sept 6. Tickets for the trip are $60 and include transportation to and from the game, a sandwich from Jimmy John's and beverages on the bus. To book your spot on the bus, contact Steve Lorenz in the ThunderBolts office. For game times, information or tickets, call 708-489-BALL or visit the team's website at www.wcthunderbolts.com
