ValleyCats Complete Sweep with 5-3 Win

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Alex Winkelman struck out four batters in five innings, Jacob Dorris allowed only one base runner in three frames of scoreless relief, and Brooks Marlow went 2-for-3 with a home run, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the West Virginia Black Bears 5-3, completing a three-game sweep at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Thursday night.

For the third time in as many games, the Black Bears took the first lead, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage with a run in the top of the second inning.

But just like in each of the other two contests in this series, the 'Cats fought back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third, when Marlow scored on a bases-loaded walk to Aaron Mizell, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Pat Porter after Bobby Wernes drove home Johnny Sewald and Antonio Nunez with a two-run single.

Winkelman, who was making his second start, and fourth appearance of the season for the Tri-City, held West Virginia to only two hits, while allowing only two runs (one earned), en route to matching his professional career-high by pitching five frames.

Juan Santos relieved Winkelman to start the sixth inning, and despite allowing a solo home run, rebounded to strike out the side.

One inning later, Marlow led off the bottom of the seventh by smashing the first pitch he saw from Black Bears reliever Julio Eusebio over the right-center field wall for his team-leading fourth homer of the season, stretching the 'Cats lead to 5-3.

That two-run cushion was more than enough for Dorris, who pitched the final three innings for Tri-City, striking out two batters, and allowing only one hit, while earning his first professional save in the process. Getting the win for the 'Cats was Winkelman, who advanced to 3-0 with Tri-City.

The win capped the first three-game sweep by the ValleyCats in the 2015 campaign. And ironically, Tri-City scored five runs in each of their three victories against West Virginia, while coming from behind in all three games.

The 'Cats will look to stay on the winning track when they take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Friday, beginning a three-game set. On the mound for Tri-City for the 7 p.m., first pitch will be LHP Junior Garcia, who will be making his first start of 2015 for the 'Cats after getting promoted from Rookie-Level Greeneville on July 27. Getting the start for Mahoning Valley will be RHP Leandro Linares.
