Auburn Doubledays Game Notes

July 30, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Tonight's Game: It's the rubber match between the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles Affiliate) and Auburn Doubledays. Erick Fedde looks to shut the door and take the series for the Doubledays against Jean Cosme for the Ironbirds. Auburn is 3- 1 in rubber matches this year while Aberdeen is 2-2.

Last Game: The Doubledays beat the Ironbirds 8-5 behind Aberdeen's defensive miscues and consistent hitting for Auburn. The Doubledays scored in five of the eight innings they hit in last night including two runs three times. The Ironbirds made a late comeback with a run in the eighth and three in the ninth, but fell short.

Dominating the Pickney: Aberdeen this season is an incredible 11-3 against the Pickney Division. The Ironbirds are 1-2 against the Crosscutters, 3-0 against the Spikes, 3-0 against the Scrappers, 3-0 against the Muckdogs, and 1-1 against the Doubledays. Aberdeen hasn't faced West Virginia. Last year, the Ironbirds went 8-9.

Family Connections: The Manager for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, Luis Pujols is the cousin of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim First Baseman Albert Pujols. Pujols served as the interim manager of the Detroit Tigers back in 2002 after Phil Garner was fired six games into the season. Detroit went 55-100 under Pujols that year, good for a winning percentage of .355, which is the lowest of any manager in Tigers history.

ACC (Blank) of the Year: In 2014, Ironbirds' outfielder DJ Stweart was named ACC Baseball Player of the Year helped lead Florida State University to a 41-14 record overall and 21-9 in ACC Play. He led the ACC with a .362 average and was tied for the most RBIs with 47. Stewart also ranked sixth in homers with seven and led the ACC with 19 doubles. In 2015, Doubledays' starting pitcher Matt Crownover was named ACC Baseball Pitcher of the Year after he finished with a 10-1 record in 14 starts for Clemson.

Extra-Base Fortune: The Doubledays only had one runner reach third on Tuesday night thanks to only one extra-base hit. That wasn't the case as the Doubledays bounced back and won 8-5 last night. Auburn recorded four extra-base hits, all of which were doubles. They also had a runner reach third in the very first inning and it took the 'Days nine innings to do that Tuesday.

The Rubber Match: Auburn is 3-1 in rubber matches this year while Aberdeen is 2- 2. The Doubledays rubber match games have come against State College twice, Mahoning Valley, and Vermont. The Doubledays beat the Spikes 8-3 once and fell to them 9-7 the other time. Against the Scrappers, the Doubledays won 6-3 in seven innings. Finally, against the Lake Monsters, the Doubledays won 6-2.

No Brooms at Falcon Park: For just the second time since 2010, there will not be a sweep between Auburn and Aberdeen. Every year from 2010 to 2013, either the Doubledays swept the IronBirds or vice versa. Last year, the two teams split the series down in Maryland 1-1. The last time the Doubledays won a series against the IronBirds was back in 2012 at Aberdeen when Auburn swept them in three games.
