Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA --- The State College Spikes jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first and second innings, then scored five more times in the fifth inning to salvage one of the three games in the series against the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 10-1 New York-Penn League victory Thursday night at Medlar Field.
The Spikes got a pair of runs in the first inning on a throwing error and a Casey Grayson RBI single, then added another pair of runs in the second on a Craig Aikin double and Thomas Spitz RBI groundout. Vermont had plenty of chances to score early as State College starter Juan Perez allowed four hits and walked six batters over the first four innings, but the Lake Monsters left 10 runners on base and their only run came in the second on a Trace Loehr RBI infield single with the bases loaded.
Vermont reliever Cody Kurz tossed a 1-2-3 fourth inning, but did not retire any of the first four batters of the fifth inning as two walks, a two-run Jhohan Acevedo triple and Leobaldo Pina RBI double gave the Spikes a 7-1 lead. State College added two more runs in the inning off Heath Bowers on a wild pitch and Orlando Olivera RBI single, then scored its 10th run in the sixth on a Casey Grayson RBI double. It marked first time June 23rd (fifth game of season) that Vermont allowed 10 or more runs in a game.
Grayson was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI for State College (19-19), while Acevedo and Pina both had two hits and two runs scored. Reliever Pedro Echemendia (4-1) tossed two hitless innings with two strikeouts to earn the win for the Spikes, who had lost 9-7 and 3-0 the previous two nights to the Lake Monsters.
Seth Brown was 3-for-5 with a double and Richie Martin 1-for-3 with two walks to lead the Lake Monsters offensively, while starter Evan Manarino (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over three innings. The loss also kept Vermont (16-22) from its first three-game winning streak of the season.
After the series win, the Lake Monsters head to Williamsport for a three-game series against the Pinckney Division-leading Crosscutters Friday-Saturday at 7:05 and Sunday at 5:05 pm. Vermont then heads back to Centennial Field for a six-game homestand against the Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones starting on Monday.
