Lowell Spinners News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PENN. - The Lowell Spinners may have righted the ship a bit as they went into Williamsport having lost 7-of-9 and took 2-of-3 from the best team in the New York-Penn League by topping the Crosscutters, 5-2, Thursday night at Bowman Field.
Lowell (20-19) jumped out to a first inning lead after a one-out triple by Andrew Benintendi. Tate Matheny picked up his fifth RBI in two games with a sacrifice fly to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Williamsport (25-14) tied things up in the third on a two-out single by Mark Laird, plating Gregori Rivero, who led off the inning with a double, to tie the score at one.
The Spinners retook the lead in the fifth inning. After a one-out single by Mitch Gunsolus, Austin Rei singled to advance Gunsolus to third. Rei was thrown out at second and with two outs Gunsolus came in to score on a wild pitch to put Lowell back ahead, 2-1.
Lowell added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kyri Washington, but the Crosscutters got that run back in the bottom half of the inning with Laird again capitalizing on a lead-off double to cut the Spinners lead to 3-2. The Spinners would add a pair of runs in the ninth, scoring their fifth run on a double steal with Washington stealing home as Gunsolus stole second to take a 5-2 lead into the ninth.
The Crosscutters would threaten in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, bringing Bobby Poyner out of the bullpen. Poyner induced a fly from James Posso that Matheny turned into a game-ending double play, doubling Jose Pujols off second to end the game.
Chad De La Guerra paced the Lowell offense with a pair of hits, while Matheny, Washington and Josh Ockimey each added RBI.
Jake Cosart (2-2, 5.63) picked up the win with six strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, striking out three and, most importantly, did not walk a batter in his longest outing of the season. Enfember Martinez went 2.1 scoreless, allowing three hits whiles striking out one before Poyner picked up his fifth save by recording the game's final two outs. The Spinners did not walk a batter in the game.
Lowell now heads to State College where they start a three-game series with the Spikes Friday night. Jose Almonte (2-2, 4.50) looks to get back on track when he gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch.
