Red Deer Rebels News Release

The Peavey Mart Centrium was dark Tuesday as the United States forfeited its World Junior Hockey Championship game against Switzerland when two American players tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The game was recorded as a 1-0 win for Switzerland in accordance with International Ice Hockey Federation rules.

"We're extremely disappointed, especially for our players," U.S. junior team general manager John Vanbiesbrouck said in a statement.

"We're operating in an ever-changing landscape and that's very challenging.

"We've followed the tournament protocol from the outset and will continue to do everything we can to ensure our players have the opportunity to compete at the world junior championship."

In Tuesday's only WJC game, Canada hammered Austria 11-2 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Regina Pats 16-year-old star Connor Bedard scored four goals, while Mason McTavish tallied twice and Cole Perfetti, Kent Johnson, Lukas Cormier, Logan Stankhoven and Mavrik Bourgue had singles.

Brett Brochu made 20 saves for Canada and Leon Sommer faced 64 shots for Austria.
