Swift Current Broncos News Release
Lethbridge, Alta. - The Swift Current Broncos (13-15-3-1) completed the home-and-home sweep of the Lethbridge Hurricanes (12-13-2-0) with a 5-2 win at the Enmax Centre Tuesday night.
Carter Stebbings opened the scoring in the game a little over halfway through the first period while on the power play. Raphael Pelletier tried to centre the puck from below the goal line, but it hit the side of the net and deflected to Stebbings who beat Bryan Thomson on the blocker side.
The Broncos had to kill off a five-minute penalty as Daylan Weigel threw a reverse hit on Ty Nash in the Broncos zone. Despite there being no call initially, 40 seconds later and before a faceoff in the Broncos zone, the officials convened and gave Weigel a five-minute head contact penalty and a game misconduct.
Swift Current killed the penalty and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Miguel Marques scored his WHL goal early in the second period to pull the Hurricanes even at 1-1. Lethbridge thought they took a 2-1 lead near the halfway mark of the period, but the replay showed Isaac Poulter got a piece of the shot before it hit the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
Six minutes after the waived-off goal, Kayden Sadhra-Kang beat Thomson under the glove off the rush to restore the Broncos lead with 4:10 remaining in the second. Both of Sadhra-Kang's goals this season have come against his former team.
Logan Barlage was given a roughing penalty late in the period as he punched Braeden Lewis during a stoppage in play, and the Broncos made him pay.
Caleb Wyrostok chipped the puck to the front of the net where Connor Hvidston was able to tap it into the open goal, adding to the Broncos lead with just 14 seconds left in the period.
The Hurricanes cut the Broncos lead in half with a goal from Noah Boyko early in the third period. From then on Poulter shut the door eventually finishing the game with 39 saves.
Swift Current regained their two-goal lead late in regulation off the rush. Wyrostok was upended by Nolan Bentham coming down the left wing, but got back to his feet and sent the puck towards the net.
Hvidston took the pass then quickly slid it across the crease for Josh Davies who fired it into the open net for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Broncos a 4-2 lead with just over four minutes to play.
Cole Nagy then hit the empty net in the final minute of regulation to seal the 5-2 win.
The Broncos return to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex to host the Winnipeg ICE (25-5-2-0) on Thursday.
