Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Right-handed starter Tyrell Jenkins produced a stellar Triple-A debut on Thursday with 7.0 scoreless innings to lead the Gwinnett Braves (43-44) to a 1-0 win over the Norfolk Tides (49-36) at Coolray Field.

Jenkins (W, 1-0), the Atlanta Braves' No. 10 prospect according to MLB.com, did not allow more than one runner on base in any inning except for the fourth and seventh. The Tides managed two one-out singles in both innings, which were the only times they had a runner in scoring position.

He scattered seven total hits, including three infield singles and no extra-base hits, walked one and struck out six in a 98-pitch, 62-strike outing.

"I was telling myself the last two days, 'Pitch like you're still in Double-A. Just kind of throw strikes, keep the ball down and let my defense work,' " Jenkins said. "Luckily, my changeup was working today. My curveball was kind of here and there, but I was lucky to get some soft contact and some big outs."

The G-Braves held a 1-0 lead when Jenkins left the game on the strength of a run they scored in the fourth inning against Norfolk right-handed starter Tyler Wilson (L, 3-5). Joey Terdoslavich had the only hit of that inning when he laced a one-out triple down the right-field line. Adonis Garcia drove him in on a groundout to shortstop, which gave him his team-leading 42nd RBI of the season.

Right-hander and Triple-A All-Star Carlos Fisher (H, 3) got Gwinnett to the ninth with their one-run lead intact after he struck out one and set Norfolk down in order in the eighth. Righty Ryan Kelly (S, 6) struck out two batters to seal the victory and end the G-Braves' six-game losing streak.

Wilson went 5.2 innings with the lone run allowed on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He tossed 90 pitches, 57 for strikes. Lefty Wesley Wright, who is on a Major League rehab assignment from the Baltimore Orioles, recorded the final out of the sixth and threw a perfect seventh. Fellow left-hander T.J. McFarland induced three consecutive groundouts to retire the G-Braves in the eighth.

Terdoslavich also picked up a single in the sixth inning, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Garcia, Cedric Hunter, Sean Kazmar and Jose Yepez combined to produce the team's other four hits, all of which were singles.

Dariel Alvarez went 2-for-4 to lead the Norfolk offense. He went 5-for-12 in the series and has batted .352 (19-for-54) with three home runs and nine RBIs in 14 games against the G-Braves this season.

The G-Braves now hit the road for a three-game series against the Durham Bulls. The final series before the Triple-A All-Star Break begins with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Friday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Right-hander Ryan Weber (2-1, 1.63 ERA) is scheduled to start for Gwinnett against right-hander Dylan Floro (7-8, 5.07 ERA) of the Bulls. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Gwinnett returns to Coolray Field on Friday, July 24 for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Charlotte Knights. Former Atlanta Braves' outfielder Ron Gant will be at the game, and the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Gant commemorative baseball card. The Fur Circus will also make an appearance that night, and fans will be treated to a spectacular "Fireworks Friday" show after the game.
