SWB Game Notes

July 9, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders dropped a 6-4 decision to the Syracuse Chiefs in 12 innings on Wednesday night at PNC Field. The Chiefs snapped a six-game losing streak to the RailRiders.

ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?!: With losses in seven of nine at PNC Field, the RailRiders stand seven games below .500 at PNC Field (21-28) and 13 games over on the road (26-13). The team has hit .283 on the road compared to a .263 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 207 runs in 39 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 180 runs in 49 games (3.7/game). The pitching has performed worse on the road (3.67 ERA) than at home (3.44 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667), who have won 19 of 25 away from Moosic.

MY SACRIFICE: In the 11th inning, Tyler Austin laid down his first career sacrifice to push Rico Noel into scoring position.

THE FIRST (FOR) NOEL: Noel entered in the top of the ninth when Nick Noonan was lifted. Noel was placed at third base for the first time in his six-year pro career. He had played second base twice as a pro and had no other game experience on the infield.

KNOW YOUR COLE: Cole Figueroa went 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of sac flies. His average sat at .184 after an 0-for-3 day at Norfolk on May 11. Since then, he has hit .386/.428/.524/.952 over 49 games played. In that time he ranks among the IL's best in AVG (1st), OBP (2nd), SLG (2nd) and OPS (2nd).

SECOND (BASE) LIFE: Since his 0-for-4 showing against Louisville on June 23 dropped his average to .268, the worst it had been since late April, second baseman Rob Refsnyder has gone 18-for-46 in 14 games played for slashes of .391/.547/.565/1.112. His 15 walks in that time rank second in the IL. His season-long .383 OBP ranks third in the IL. He has homered twice in the last three games, both pull jobs hit with authority. His error total has also dropped dramatically month by month: April (7E in 20GP), May (4E in 24GP), June (2E in 27GP), July (0E in 9GP). Refsnyder has hit second in the order in back-to-back games after never hitting above third all season.

OH THE DUGAS DAY: Taylor Dugas doubled in a run in the third inning and received an intentional walk. The former University of Alabama star extended his hitting streak to eight games in a row. After starting his Triple-A tenure 1-for-13 with a .200 OBP, he has hit .393 (11-for-28) while lifting his OBP to .356.

UP & DOWN: All-Star first baseman/DH Kyle Roller leads the team in homers (12), RBIs (47) and walks (44), but finds himself in a 9-for-54 (.167) funk over his last 14 games played with 15 strikeouts and just one extra-base hit (.185 SLG). Roller will not be among the IL's three participants in the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday, July 13 at Omaha's Wener Park, but two former Yankees' minor leaguers will participate for the PCL in Tacoma's Jesus Montero, an SWB alumnus, and Reno's Peter O'Brien.

OFF THE RAILS: The teams combined for 25 hits (SYR-14, SWB-11), but only three extra-base knocks (SYR-1, SWB-2)...The RailRiders committed three errors, but also turned three double plays...The Chiefs and RailRiders left a combined 18 men on base during the game...Neither team scored from the bottom of the sixth through the 11th inning...Kyle Davies tossed his third straight quality start, but left a 3-3 tie...He has won once in his last five starts.
