Moosic, PA (July 9, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at PNC Field. Tony Gwynn, Jr. drove in three of the five Chiefs runs, lifting Syracuse to its fifth win its last six games.

Syracuse (33-55) grabbed the lead for good in the second inning. Caleb Ramsey picked up his first of four singles with one out and stole second base. After a pop out, Dan Butler singled and Darin Mastroianni walked to load the bases. Gwynn, Jr. followed with a two-RBI single to right field, plating Ramsey and Butler to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs added to the lead in the fourth. Ramsey singled to start the inning and Josh Johnson and Butler each walked, chasing RailRiders starter Jose De Paula. Danny Burawa came out of the bullpen, and after a fielder's choice at the plate, Gwynn, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center field to push the lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, the Chiefs added another. Kevin Keyes doubled to start the inning and scored on Ramsey's third single of the game to give Syracuse a 4-0 advantage.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (47-42) scratched across two runs in the sixth. Chiefs starter Bruce Billings walked Ramon Flores to start the inning, then surrendered back-to-back singles to Aaron Judge and Greg Bird to load the bases. Billings walked Rob Refsnyder to bring in the first RailRiders run. Syracuse then turned to Rafael Martin, who allowed a single to Kyle Roller, scoring Judge to cut the score to 4-2. But Martin would strike out Austin Romine and get Dan Fiorito to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the score at 4-2.

The Chiefs put up an insurance run in the ninth. Gwynn, Jr. reached on an error on Rico Noel at third and scored on a Jason Martinson double to finish the scoring at 5-2.

Syracuse returns home Friday for a doubleheader against Rochester. The Chiefs game one starter has yet to be announced. The Red Wings are scheduled to throw Taylor Rogers in game one. Taylor Hill is expected to start game two and Rochester's starter is still to be announced. Game one is slated to start at 5:05 p.m.
