October 30, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Tyler Kostelecky scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive night, pushing the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Fargo Force 4-3 in overtime at Scheels Arena Saturday.
On Friday night, Kostelecky had broken a 1-1 tie in the second period, then added an assist during a 3-1 Waterloo victory. Saturday he scored twice and also notched an assist for a five-point weekend. He is now Waterloo's leading scorer with 11 points this season.
Saturday's decisive score came 1:44 into overtime. Kostelecky stepped through the right circle on an odd-man rush. He showed the puck to goalie Louden Hogg, the pulled it away to flip in a backhander from the top of the crease.
The Black Hawks were limited to five first period shots on goal but scored on two of them. Just 1:48 into the game, Patrick Geary lifted the puck toward the net from the top of the left circle; the chance made it through traffic and past Hogg.
Then with 55.2 seconds remaining in the period, Waterloo controlled a faceoff at the beginning of a power play, allowing Michael LaStarza to put a low shot toward the net. Garrett Schifsky collected the rebound and knocked it across the goal line for a 2-0 lead.
Two Fargo goals separated by just 30 second erased the Hawks' lead. Bret Link had the first one at 2:15, putting the puck over Jack Williams' right shoulder. On a subsequent faceoff in the Waterloo zone, Cooper Gay put in a shot off a Waterloo defender.
Kostelecky gave the Hawks a new lead at 10:02 with a breakaway goal rifled in from between the circles.
However, a partial Fargo breakaway resulted in a penalty shot at 11:56, and Gustav Portillo converted to tie the teams at 3-3.
The Force outshot the Hawks 13-11 in a scoreless third. For the game, Fargo had a 38-30 advantage in the shot count. Williams made 35 saves. The Friday and Saturday results marked Waterloo's first wins in Fargo on consecutive nights since January of 2014.
Up next, the Black Hawks return home to meet the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday at Young Arena. College students with ID can take advantage of $10 tickets. The game will also mark the kickoff of The Salvation Army of Waterloo-Cedar Falls' 2021 Red Kettle Campaign.
