Capitols Return to Winning Ways, Down Green Bay 4-2
October 30, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols bounce back into the win column tonight after downing the Green Bay Gamblers 4-2 to secure a home-and-home series split. Madison improves to 8-2-1 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes, the Caps rattled off four lamp lighters in the final 40 minutes of regulation. Three of which came in the 3rd period.
"It was another good battle for both teams but I did think we took over the game as far as our compete and our work ethic in the 2nd period and we didn't look back," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said.
With 4:56 left in the 2nd frame, Capitols blueliner Trey Ausmus would tally the Capitols first goal of the game. The North Dakota commit netted his first career United State Hockey League goal after catching a Green Bay clearing attempt out of the air, walking it into the slot and firing it by Gamblers netminder Aaron Randazzo.
Entering the 3rd period, the Capitols picked up right where they left off. Capitols forward Nick DeSantis blasted home a puck into a yawning Gamblers net. Madison centerman and Michigan commit Tyler Haskins won a puck battle out front and swung around behind the Green Bay net to feed a wide-open DeSantis. Capitols forward Quinn Finley was credited with the secondary assist. Just under seven game minutes later, Boston University commit Jack Musa buried his team leading 8th goal of the season backhanding his own rebound home 17 seconds into a man-advantage. Tallying the helpers were defensive partners Blake Dangos and Nick Wallace. Putting the nail in the proverbial coffin was Madison winger Jake Dunlap with his half ice shot into an empty Green Bay net with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Earning this afternoon's first star of the game, Capitols netminder Simon Latkoczy turned aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced including some spectacular highlight reel stops. The Omaha Mavericks commit improves to 7-1-0 for the 2021-22 campaign. On the opposite, the Capitols threw 41 of their own shots on net in the contest.
Standing tall on special teams, Madison stonewalled Green Bay on all four of their power play attempts.
The Capitols and Gamblers will engage in battle again for a one game series next Saturday, November 6th at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
