Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Back-to-back goals in the middle part of the third period proved too much for the Youngstown Phantoms (2-6-0-1) to overcome as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Friday night at the Covelli Centre.
Adam Flammang opened up scoring after blasting the puck into the net off a pass from Andy Moore at 7:11 to give the RoughRiders the 1-0 lead. Youngstown got their first power play of the night later in the period when Joe Fleming was called for tripping at 12:27. The Phantoms weren't able to take advantage of the man advantage and went into the first intermission trailing by one.
After a quiet start to the second period, Justin Varner fired the puck from the top of the right circle with just enough force for it to trickle past Connor Hasley (18 saves) and tie the game at 14:56.
The RoughRiders took back the lead 7:05 into the third period when Andy Moore lifted the puck between the crossbar and Owen Bartoszkewicz's (17 saves) shoulders. The RoughRiders extended their lead at 8:29 off a power play goal by Grant Ahcan. Youngstown had another power play opportunity after former Phantom Yusaku Ando was sent to the box for elbowing at 12:16. Trey Taylor brought the Phantoms back within one when he ripped the puck past Hasley for a power play goal at 13:04.
"Whatever is asked of Trey, he goes out and does it and executes it," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "At the same time while trying to get better at it and that's why he's going to end up playing at a very high level."
Despite a strong offensive showing in the final 5 minutes of regulation, the Phantoms were unable to find an equalizer and Cedar Rapids came away with the win. Youngstown's winless streak extended to five games while Cedar Rapids ran their winning streak to three games.
The Phantoms are back in action Saturday night at the Covelli Centre for a rematch against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders with puck drop set for 7:05.
