Chicago Steel News Release

PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN - The Chicago Steel (8-1-3-0; 19 pts.) saw their franchise record 11- game season-opening point streak come to an end in a 5-1 decision at the hands of Team USA (U18) (3-7-1-0; 7 pts.) on Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena in Michigan.

Cole Spicer led Team USA with a pair of goals and Cutter Gauthier, Maddox Fleming and Ryan Leonard added markers for the home team. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Joe Miller tallied the lone goal for Chicago.

The regulation loss was the first such defeat for the Steel since April 2, 2021 when Chicago fell 5-4 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

The Steel started the contest with the first goal, a beautiful passing play between Miller and Arizona Coyotes prospect Sam Lipkin. Miller, gliding in on the left side of the offensive zone, found Lipkin across the ice as Lipkin feathered a backhand pass back to Miller, extending his goal streak to three straight games with a heavy wrister.

The one-goal cushion lasted until late in the first before Team USA struck with two goals in 18 seconds to take the lead for good.

Cutter Gauthier lit the lamp with just over three minutes to play before Spicer scored his first of the night on the very next shift.

With Chicago trailing by just one heading into the middle frame, Team USA began to put distance between themselves and the visitors.

Spicer tallied his second goal of the game and fourth of the season just over a minute into the period, extending the lead to 3-1 before Maddox Fleming snuck a puck past Haas.

Ryan Leonard finished the night's scoring for Team USA with his second of the year midway through the third, comfortably extending the lead to 5-1, the eventual final score.

Team USA held Chicago to an 0-for-4 night on the man advantage. It was the first time in 10 games the Steel failed to score on a power play.

Haas finished the night with 28 stops, suffering his first loss of the season. He now has a 5-1-0- 0 record between the Steel pipes.

Chicago finishes its current three-game road stretch with a 3:05 pm CT puck drop against the Youngstown Phantoms on Sunday, October 31. Steel defenseman Austen May makes his return to Covelli Centre as an opponent after skating for the Phantoms for the previous two seasons, prior to being acquired by Chicago during the 2021 offseason.
