Tying Run Thrown out at Plate in Loss

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Central Division leading Gary SouthShore RailCats had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the top of the ninth in a 10-9 loss to the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday night.

Two runs crossed the plate in the first inning for the RailCats, who scored more runs in the frame than the first two games combined. Adam Klein led off the game with a walk. Mike Massaro and Brad Boyer followed with singles to load the bases. Following a double play Toddric Johnson reached on an error enabling the first run to score. Kyle Haines answered by slapping a single to left to score Boyer and finish the inning.

The second inning proved difficult for the second consecutive night as Sioux City again sent 11 men to the plate, scoring six runs to grab a 6-2 edge. The X's collected four straight singles before an out was recorded. Wally Backman, Jr. put Sioux City in front with a two-run single. The Explorers posted eight hits in the frame against Carlos Rivas, all of which were singles. Sioux City added an unearned run in the third to go up 7-2.

The RailCats chipped away at the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to pull within 7-5. Klein knocked home a pair with a double to right. The X's extended the lead to 8-5 with a tally in the fifth.

Sioux City starter Ty Marotz departed following five innings, turning the ball over to the bullpen which blew the lead as the RailCats plated four runs in the sixth to retake the lead at 9-8.Cristian Guerrero knocked home the first run by legging out a bases loaded infield single with two away. Johnson answered with a double to right, scoring a pair to tie the game. The throw went in to second and Guerrero sprinted home, scoring the go ahead run with a head first dive into the plate.

Ray Serrano evened the game with a first pitch homer in the bottom of the frame. The Explorers then stepped in front 10-9 with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Kent Sakamoto single with two outs.

With closer Emiliano Fruto on the mound, the RailCats battled to the final out. Haines drew a one out walk while Rohde followed with a single. Chris Carrara lined a base hit to left but Haines was thrown out at the plate by T. J. Bohn in a very close play to end the contest.

The RailCats registered 13 hits in the contest as eight of the nine batters posted a hit. Rohde led a parade of four players with more than one hit, finishing with three. Brian Grening (5-2) took the loss out of the bullpen.

The RailCats (47-35), who continue to lead the Central by two games over Wichita with 18 contests left in the year, have dropped eight straight to Sioux City including six in a row at Lewis & Clark Park. With the win, the X's take the season series from the RailCats.

The series concludes tomorrow night with another 7:05 p.m. affair in the final meeting of the year between the two clubs, who face each other more than any other opponent. The RailCats will place RHP Scott Shaw (9-3, 4.51) on the mound against Sioux City RHP Nick Schumacher (8-4, 2.98). The game can be heard live on The Lakeshore FM.

The RailCats return home on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. to open a six-game series with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. Highlights of the homestand include Superhero/Villain Night with fireworks on Friday, toothbrush holder giveaway on Saturday, a Dollar Monday, and a visit from competitive eating legend Takeru Kobayashi on Wendesday.
