Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---Captains first baseman Andres Rodriguez had a monster night at the plate, hitting two home runs and knocking in seven while going 4-for-5 in Shreveport-Bossier's 12-3 rout of the Ft. Worth Cats Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field.
Rodriguez joins Bryan Sabatella as the second Captains slugger to knock in seven runs in a game this year. His two blasts to left field off Cats starter Phillip Bartleski (L, 4-2) give him 11 on the year, most on the club. He wasn't the only offensive star of the night, as rightfielder Chad Gabriel went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, catcher Scott Thomas went 2-for-3 and centerfielder Robert Perry added a pair of RBIs.
On the mound, Alex Kaminsky (W, 5-2) was terrific in his Captains debut. The right-hander, who arrived in Shreveport with Gabriel in a trade with El Paso earlier this month, pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out four.
Ft. Worth led momentarily in the third when Cory Morales doubled to start the inning and scored on a Will Calhoun ground out. But Shreveport-Bossier would take the lead with three in the bottom of the inning and never trail again. A Jonathan Johnson RBI fielder's choice would put the Captains on the board. Mike Provencher's double would score Johnson to give Shreveport-Bossier the lead. Provencher, who took third on the throw home off his double, scored on Robert Perry's sac fly.
Rodriguez's first homer of the night came with one on and one out in the fourth to make it 5-1. Shreveport-Bossier put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth, including Rodriguez's three-run homer and an RBI single by Perry.
Bartleski, who made the start after probable Wade Mackey was scratched before game time, allowed eight runs on eight hits in five plus innings, while walking two and striking out none. Prior to the two Rodriguez home runs, he had allowed just one home run in 55.2 innings this year.
The Captains went up 12-1 in the eighth with three more runs off Cats reliever Robert Romero. With two on and two outs, Gabriel scored Perry with a base hit. Rodriguez's double into the right-centerfield gap scored Sabatella and Gabriel.
Ft. Worth would plate two with two outs in the ninth off Captains reliever Hector Carrasco. Carrasco walked two and allowed a two-run double to Marcos Rodriguez before getting Trent Lockwood to ground out to second to end the game. Marcos Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the loss.
Sabatella was the first Captain to knock in seven runs in a ball game this year. He had seven RBIs against Amarillo on June 26 at National Bank Sox Stadium.
Thomas has had a strong homestand for Shreveport-Bossier, going 6-for-9. Gabriel is 9-for-21 in his first five games with the Captains. The Captains have outscored the Cats 23-7 in the first two games of the series. The two games mark the first time since May 26-27 that the Captains have scored double-digits runs in back-to-back games.
Shreveport-Bossier goes for the sweep Thursday, August 11 on Sports World Shirt Off Our Back Night/99X Thirsty Thursday where fans can enjoy $2.00 beers and enter to win gameworn jerseys from their favorite Captains players. Shreveport-Bossier throws Osvaldo Rodriguez (5-4, 5.78) to the mound. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
