ST. PAUL, MN- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the St. Paul Saints 8-2 at Midway Stadium on Wednesday night.

Junior Guerra kept the Saints to two earned over seven and two-thirds innings to earn the win and help the Wingnuts pull back within 2.0 games of St. Paul for the wild card lead. Guerra allowed just two hits over the first seven innings, and only five by the end of the night. Guerra struck out six, walked two, and is now 6-1 over his last eight starts.

Offensively, eight of Wichita's nine starters had at least one hit. Carlos Rivera and Jorge Delgado opened the top of the second with back-to-back singles. Josh Workman laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the Wingnuts second and third and one out. After Saints' starter Donald Brandt struck out Peter Barrows, Edwin Bellorin ripped a groundball double down the left field line to give the Wingnuts an early 2-0 lead.

Wichita broke the game open in the top of the third. Mike Conroy led off with a single and then helped break up a double play which resulted in a throwing error by Justin Snyder that sent Josh Horn to second base. Juan Richardson drove in Horn with a long, RBI double to the right-center field fence. Rivera followed with a line drive double down the left field line that made it 4-0. Delgado narrowly missed a home run, flying out to deep right field, but Workman slugged a two-run shot with two outs to give the Wingnuts a 6-0 lead.

Rivera doubled to right-center leading off the fifth and went to third when Delgado singled to left. Workman lined a single to center field to score Rivera with the Wingnuts' seventh run. Brandt was relieved by Kris Edwards who allowed a hit-and-run, RBI single to right from Bellorin that made it 8-0.

Guerra did not allow a hit until Ronnie Bourquin's bloop single down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints scored their first run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to deep left field that scored Argelis Nunez.

St. Paul scored their second and final run in the bottom of the eighth on a single to right from Steve Mays. Matt Nevarez took over for Guerra with two on and two out in the eighth and retired Ole Sheldon on a flyout to center to end the inning.

Logan Hoch worked around three singles in the bottom of the ninth, and struck out the side to finish the game.

Brandt went four-plus innings and took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits. Brandt did not walk a batter and struck out three. It was Brandt's first loss at home this season.

With Gary's loss at Sioux City, Wichita is also back within 2.0 games of first place in the Central Division.
